VP of Business Development, Gawker Media
Erin Pettigrew started out as an intern at a little-known digital publisher called Gawker Media in 2005.Since then, Erin has risen to the role of Vice President of Business Development at Gawker, which reaches more than 40 million readers a month.In her interview, Erin talks about the skills it takes to be successful in the media world.
A graduate of Yale University, Erin Pettigrew was hired by Gawker Media in 2005 as the first staffer for the revenue team and now serves as Vice President of Business Development. In this role, she builds new revenue streams for Gawker Media through advertising, licensing partnerships and ecommerce products, and helped grow the company’s sales and marketing team from two to 28 members.
While just a startup at the time in 2005, Gawker Media now reaches over 100 million readers each month. As of March 2012, it is the parent company for eight different weblogs, including Gawker.com, Deadspin, and Jezebel.
Gawker.com, the company’s flagship blog, bills itself as “the source for daily Manhattan media news and gossip.”
Pettigrew worked her way up in the company as it grew. She was promoted to Manager of Ad Operations and Research in 2007, Director of Sales Marketing and Operations in 2009, Executive Director of Sales Marketing and Operations in 2011 and, finally, Vice President of Business Development in 2012.
Pettigrew has spoken on digital business topics to professional groups, including Internet Week NY, Wharton Business School, Digiday and General Assembly. Erin is also a former professional dancer and a contributor to the New York City tech and business innovation scenes.
